Let's talk soy beans, because apparently, soy foods and food containing soy have a range of health benefits. So let's discover them together.

Soy is a high-quality protein. It is one of only two known plant foods (besides amaranth) to contain all the essential amino acids we need.

It is high in fibre, high in protein, low in saturated fat, cholesterol free, lactose free, a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, a source of antioxidants and it is also high in phytoestrogens.

These last ones are hormone-like substances that mimic the action of estrogen. It can help some women to manage menopausal hot flushes and other hormone-related issues. It can also help protect them against coronary heart disease (CHD) during their reproductive years. So... yay soy!

If you want to increase your intake of soy, you can choose whole soy foods (soy milk, soy yoghurt, soy bread and tofu), but just make sure that the soy foods you buy are made from whole soybeans and not soy isolates.

Mindfully,
Sam.
